why didn't she quit before the election if she knew she was leaving? >> one of the questions we wanted to ask her. and also ask her, how early did she know she'd be leaving? she filed paper work with the house that really within nine days after the election she was already in talks to take over this million and a half dollar job. her chief of staff told us the job opportunity just popped up out of the blue. seems remarkable, especially when you also see that the national rural electric cooperative has been the congresswoman's biggest single campaign donor contributing $72,000 to her and her husband over the years and another 20 grand just to the congresswoman political action committee. >> so now they're going to actually pay her a lot more than that. in fact, a lot more than she would make if she stayed in congress, right? that's way more than her salary. >> it is a major pay boost, we think. we don't know the exact figures yet. but as a member of congress, she would be paid $174,000 a year. that's a lot, of course, for a lot of us. while we don't kno

the dynamic is there are more than half a dozen democrats from the red states up for re-election next year, and they really feel that this is something they don't want to touch with a ten-foot pole. more broadly, there are about a dozen conservative democrats or at least democrats from conservative states who also just are highly skeptical of the idea of supporting this. and if you look at what the nra said today, it gives you an example of why. i'll read you part of the statement, anderson. they said the american people know gun bans do not work and we're confident congress will reject senator feinstein's wrong-headed approach. now, anderson, of all of the proposals she announced earlier this month, it seems that background checks, some form of them, have the best chance of passing, but even people who support gun control said that's an uphill climb. one person who supports it explained the political dynamite saying democrats don't do well in gun fights. >> interesting. >> anderson. >> dana, thank you very much. >>> this next story is no less remarkable. a terrible tragedy. a family

he doesn't have to run for re-election. we can talk about these policies. president didn't do women in combat. he didn't lift a finger on climate change or push hard on immigration and gun control in his first term so he's a second-term president who doesn't have to face voters and these are things he wants to bring front and center. how much will he follow-up? we'll see. they do believe in the white house, look at the demographics of this country and now they're changing and the obama coalition from the last two elections, they believe if they can cement the loyalty of those voters in and part of that is acting on issues they most care about, these are issues that fit the obama coalition. if they can cement that in on a national scale, the republicans are in trouble. >> and margaret, you would agree the president believes this. it's not just politics. he believes in all of these things. >> i think so. i think he's sincere. i don't think there's anything insincere in saying that. it's politically convenient. >> fascinating days. appreciate you being with us
